Dual AB/MA in Linguistics

Double Dawgs Logo

The Department of Linguistics offers a dual A.B./M.A. degree program (part of UGA's DoubleDawgs initiative) that students can complete in 5 years.

Eligible students can apply for admission to the dual-degree pathway at any time – applications are accepted and processed on a rolling basis. Students admitted to the pathway will normally begin taking graduate classes during their fourth year, for a total of four courses/12 hours that can be used to satisfy requirements for both the A.B. and M.A. degrees. During the fourth year students will also apply for admission to the M.A. program in Linguistics, and will complete the remaining M.A. degree requirements in their fifth year of study.

Application Process

Who is eligible to apply to the dual-degree pathway?

Linguistics majors who:

  • have completed LING 3060 and LING 3150(W)
  • have completed 60 hours or more of undergraduate coursework
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in LING courses and a cumulative GPA of 3.0

Note: if you are already in your final year of your undergraduate degree and/or have already completed the majority of the required coursework for your Linguistics major, the dual-degree pathway will probably not benefit you; you need to have room to take 12 hours of graduate coursework in Linguistics after being admitted to the dual-degree pathway and before you receive your A.B. degree. Contact Dr. Renwick if you have questions.

How do I apply?

Schedule a meeting with the pathway advisor:

Dr. Margaret Renwick
Undergraduate Coordinator

Apply online for admission to the dual-degree pathway on the DoubleDawgs website (click the button that says "Apply to Pathway"). This is actually not the full application, but just indicates your intention to apply, and will allow the department to process your application in Athena. You must also submit an application form and two recommendation letters directly to Dr. Renwick.

UGA also offers a dual AB in Linguistics/MAT in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages degree program. Contact Dr. Lou Tolosa-Casadont for more information.
