Experiential Learning Information

It's a simple concept - when you learn by doing, you learn differently. You learn more. You learn beyond subject matter – you also learn about yourself.

At UGA, Experiential Learning is designed to deliver impact – for our communities, and above all, for our students. Experiential Learning can elevate a student’s trajectory, enhance  competencies and enable opportunities, now and for years to come – that’s why it’s a (required) part of every UGA degree.

Find an Experiential learning opportunity

experiential learning in linguistics

There are several opportunities within the Department of Linguistics for Experiential Learning.

(1) CURO Research Projects

Many undergraduates pursue research projects in linguistics, under the supervision of a faculty mentor. You can earn course credit and satisfy the Experiential Learning requirement by taking LING 4960R, 4970R, 4980R, or 4990R. Contact the Undergraduate Coordinator for more information.

(2) LING 4880/6880 Introduction to Language Documentation and Field Methods

Students in this course work with a language consultant who speaks an understudied language. In addition to learning about the ethics of language documentation and best practices, students elicit data from the language consultant to develop their own description of the language in question. This course satisfies the Experiential Learning requirement.

(3) Study Abroad

The Department of Linguistics offers a student exchange program with the University of Hannover. For more information, please visit our Study Abroad page.

(4) LING 4945 Internship in Teaching Linguistics

Students who have performed exceptionally well in a given course may apply to serve as an intern to assist a faculty member who is teaching the course in a subsequent semester. Contact the Undergraduate Coordinator, Dr. Keith Langston for more information.
