James H. West University of Georgia Abstract In this paper, a unified analysis of the Irish autonomous verb across several attested constructions is presented using the formalism of Lexical-Functional Grammar. Namely, the present analysis proposes that no semantic argument is assigned to the subject of the autonomous verb, which unifies its various applications in intransitive, transitive, and raising-like constructions. This is followed by a computational application of the theoretical analysis using the Xerox Linguistic Environment. A computer grammar was written for this application that is capable of parsing novel sentences within the distribution of its ruleset and lexicon. Data and graphical analyses from this computational application are presented, followed by a discussion of the applications of this analysis. West, James H. 2022.
